Outdoor Entertaining

With the weather starting to warm up and summer fast approaching, now is the perfect time to start planning summer parties to take advantage of the long days, nice weather, and sunshine. While summer tends to feel more relaxed and easy-going, entertaining can be stressful and a lot of work.  To help beat the heat that can come with entertaining, we have some helpful tips for how to throw an outdoor bash and have it go off without a hitch!

  1. Know your limits.

This is probably the most important tip of all! No matter how seasoned of a host you are, you need to make sure you know your limits. The more people you invite the more food you’ll need to make, the more seating you’ll need, and the more people you’ll need to entertain during the party. Don’t try to take on too much and prep as much as possible ahead of time so that you are able to enjoy your party as well and avoid stressing to prep before guests arrive.

  1. Beat the Heat

Since summer days can get very hot, try to avoid midday events. Try planning a weekend brunch or a dinner in the evening to take advantage of those warm summer nights. If you can’t avoid the midday timeframe, make sure you have plenty of shade for your guests to sit under so that they can get relief from the summer sun. Also make sure you have plenty of ice on hand as keeping drinks cool will help your guests feel refreshed and cool as well. You may also consider fans or patio misters to blow on your guests and cool them off while they are outdoors.

  1. Keep it simple

Summer is all about relaxing and your party should be no different. Keep your party as simple as possible to enjoy your soiree to the fullest. All a good party needs to be a success is simple food, good company and a comfortable environment so don’t worry too much about having elaborate table setting or party decor. While those things are nice, it’s more important that you aren’t worried about making sure everything is perfect and enjoy yourself instead.

Also, make sure you think about cleanup ahead of time as well. Outdoor entertaining lends itself well to disposable plates and flatware, which will make cleanup a breeze! You can also set up a labeled trash and recycling area so that guests are able to clean up after themselves easier without having to bother the host asking where they should throw away trash. This makes it a win-win for everyone!

  1. Make Sure Guests Enjoy Themselves

It may seem like a no brainer, but you want to make sure your guests have a good time at your outdoor party! A good idea is to set up tables in different areas, such as food on one side of the patio and drinks on the other. This will encourage more mingling by getting your guests to move around.

You may also consider games as well! Utilize your lush lawn by setting up horseshoes, croquet, a bean bag toss or even just putting out a soccer ball to kick around or a football to toss. Doing this will create an opportunity for guests to engage with each other rather than just talking. This is especially smart for a group where people may not know each other very well as the games will help break the ice.

  1. Keep the pests away

There is nothing more annoying than dealing with bugs hovering around. A great way to combat this problem is to light citronella candles around your patio. You can also light citronella stake torches as well. These not only will deter pests from annoying your guests but will also add a nice ambience to the outdoor area.

  1. Light up the night

Lighting is very important to an outdoor party that goes into the night. Guests still want to be able to see after the sun sets so make sure you plan ahead. Stringing lights above the patio adds a fun, festive look while also adding extra ambiance. It can sometimes be difficult or time consuming to hang lights in this manner so if it’s something you’re considering, make sure you leave yourself enough time to complete the project in advance. There are plenty of other options for portable lights that you can set up for the night and put them away when not in use.

With these pointers on how to throw a successful outdoor event, you should have no problem hosting an unforgettable party. It is so enjoyable to embrace the outdoors when the weather is warmer but there are some different challenges that come along with entertaining outdoors. Hopefully these tips will help your next outdoor event be a success for both you and your guests to enjoy!
