A tropical oasis was what these clients needed to escape the daily grind. With a crisp clean color scheme and pops of bright vibrant color, this home was transformed into a true staycation retreat. Combining rustic textures, rich wood tones and tropical design accents from the serene master bedroom all the way down to the outdoor kitchen, we were able to make the design flow throughout the house.
Starting in the master bedroom, we wanted to make it feel like a true oasis retreat for the homeowners to be able to come relax and unwind after hectic days. Keeping the overall feeling light and airy throughout the room while anchoring the design with rich, dark furniture pieces helps this room feel fresh and inviting. There is ample seating in the room to allow comfortable places to sit and watch television or curl up with a good book. The lighting throughout the space can also be adjusted and dimmed to create a more ambient feeling through the fireplace, sconces, lamps, and accent can lights. The subtle pops of color bring in some visual interest while not overpowering the space and keeping it feeling fresh.
We carried the same feeling into the spacious master bathroom as well. For the double vanities we chose to finish the cabinetry in a dark espresso finish to echo the feeling of the furniture in the bedroom. The tub in the center of the bathroom creates a focal point that we chose to accent with can lighting and accessories. Sconces frame each vanity and add accent lighting. Long rugs make the space more inviting and assure added comfort when using the full space of the vanity. The bathroom flows beautifully with the bedroom and creates an inviting retreat.
The kitchen and family room are one large open concept area in this home, and where the homeowners spend the most time. We wanted this space to feel like the true heart of the home and be comfortable and inviting for everyday use. The kitchen cabinetry was finished in rich medium wood tones that we accented with cream granite with veins of darker caramel and copper running through it. The travertine backsplash was accented with a large mosaic featuring metal accent tiles over the stovetop to create a beautiful focal point and we added pendant lighting over the large island to add warmth and extra task lighting. The barstools have a natural woven back, adding to the tropical feel in this home.
In the family room, we again kept the overall feeling light and airy with a few pops of color to keep it feeling fresh. The large custom leather sectional provides plenty of seating and is very comfortable for watching TV. The custom built in was finished in a darker wood to add richness and flow better with the kitchen cabinetry. The homeowners like to see the greenery in their landscape so for window treatments we added simple drapery panels with a band in an accent fabric at the bottom so that we didn’t interfere with the view. We redid the fireplace with a cream split faced stacked stone and accented it with bright three dimensional wall décor above and orange vases collected from the homeowners travels on the floor next to it.
Moving into the living room, the client wanted this space to be kept more formal while still flowing with the tropical feel throughout the home. They also wanted to keep the existing large gold fireplace that features bamboo carvings above the mantle. We chose to warm this room up more with dark wood flooring which added a dramatic feel as a base. The furniture we brought in has natural woven accents on the sides and back, as well as legs to mimic the look of bamboo. The rich caramel finish of the sofas helps keep the formality in the space while still embracing the tropical feel. We kept the upholstery, pillows, and rug lighter so that the room didn’t get too dark and added wall sconces for extra warmth and lighting. With the gold tones in the fireplace, we chose to pull in that tone throughout the fabrics. For the final touches of drama and formality in the space, we added drapery panels high above the windows since the ceilings are so high in this room. We then added two large palm trees with birds of paradise around the base to soften the room and really take the tropical feeling over the top!
Upon completion of this project, our client was very happy with the end result. They felt that hiring a designer was a great choice as they didn’t have to worry about all the details that come along with a complete home remodel of this size. Their home now feels like a tropical oasis where they can relax after long days at work and entertain with ease which is exactly how what they hoped the remodel would turn out.
